1 Samuel 8:4–9
“Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.”
Oftentimes we are searching for solace in things that have the illusion of dependability – material gain, relationships, approval, success.
In this passage, God explains that Israel desired a king to rule over them because they believed that across the world, everyone possessed something that they were lacking. They longed for the kind of stability they saw in the nations around them. Yet, God revealed that the true need wasn’t a different leader, but a deep trust in who they had.
In life, we may find ourselves doing just the same, believing that the next achievement, the next life change, will finally bring us the peace and stability we have been searching for. But true lasting security isn’t found in these temporary circumstances. It’s found in the presence of God.
Today, notice when you are tempted to place your hope in something outside of God. Ask yourself if you are chasing what you believe others have, or if you are resting truly in God whose love will never fail.
What am I relying on today? Where is my hope and trust going? Where do I need to surrender these things back to God?
