through heartbreak, belonging
Where are your places of belonging today? Where has a spirit of adoption led you into new relationships and spaces to heal heartbreak and find home?
Romans 8:15
For you do not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as children by whom we cry, “Abba! Father! Parent!”
This verse always frustrated me.
My first friends were adopted. We’re three weeks apart and my childhood memories are riddled with the twins gapped tooth smiles.
As we grew up, their adoption became harder and harder to ignore.
They desperately wanted to understand where they came from and where they belonged.
Race and religion divided them from their adoptive parents like the Grand Canyon. It was heartbreaking - bearing witness to their confusion and loss.
I think believing the Gospel, grappling with the Holy Spirit and submitting to God is hard. It’s confusing and does not come without loss.
We all desperately want to understand where we came from. Even more so, we want to find where we belong.
Where are your places of belonging today? Where has a spirit of adoption led you into new relationships and spaces to heal heartbreak and find home?
