there must be a better way
Who are the prophets in your life you can turn to for help dealing with hard truths?
1 Samuel 8:7, 9
Holy Being answered Samuel, “Comply with the people’s request…but give them a clear warning, telling them how the king will rule over them.”
Samuel warns the people that a king will conscript their sons and daughters and confiscate the best of their land and livestock.
I’m reminded of our era’s prophets — those who warn us not only of the dangers looming ahead, but also of Empire already here. It tends to be those most harmed by our current systems — like Black and Indigenous people, queer and disabled folk — who can see past nationalism’s rose-tinted glasses, override the instinct to avoid painful truths.
July is Disability Pride Month, so I’m thinking especially about my friend Laura, who calls disabled people like themself “canaries in the coal mine."
We’re usually the first to burn out in academia and workplaces that demand that everyone sacrifice sleep and free time on the altar of Productivity.
We drop first; but this culture isn’t sustainable for even the “most abled” body and mind; everyone burns out eventually.
There must be a better way!
Do you ever realize deep down that something in your life is not sustainable in the long run, but feel like facing that reality would be harder than just carrying on? Who are the prophets in your life you can turn to for help dealing with those hard truths?
