The Scrappy Work
What is your next step toward reimagining the church to meet the needs of today’s folks on the margins?
Ruth 4:13 &17
So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. When they came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son….They named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David.
It’s a long and private story, but throughout my life, I have had a strong connection with the book of Ruth. I have often heard it pointed out how God took a Moabite widow and made her a part of Jesus’s lineage. Amazing. God made it happen.
But I also want to point out that Ruth made it happen, too! In this whole book, Ruth doesn’t sit idly on the side. Ruth is fighting (and maybe seducing, but that’s a story for another time…) to make her life happen. Ruth is unconventional and scrappy. She certainly isn’t demure.
We can’t wait for the church to change and meet our needs, we have to reimagine it ourselves. It isn’t someone else’s job. It’s ours.
What is your next step toward reimagining the church to meet the needs of today’s folks on the margins? How do you take part in this scrappy work?
