Luke 12:51
Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, I have come instead to bring division.
If there is one sermon that you will not likely hear on a Sunday, it will be one on Jesus saying that he came to bring division. This is because this message does not sound like the more sanitized understanding of Jesus that we are often taught. The divisive Jesus came to remove our excuses.
Before Christ people could say that they didn’t understand what they should or shouldn’t do. But, by giving an example of how to be obedient to God’s Ways, Jesus brought division by making it very clear who are hearers of the Word and who are the doers.
Just as heat is used to separate dross from metals, the fire of Jesus’s ministry reveals who is who in the kingdom.
What was an experience that revealed to you someone’s sincerity? Could you see the benefit of dividing the sincere from the insincere?
