The Body
How might you better communicate with other parts of The Body, creating community, care, and change in the world around you?
1 Corinthians 12:14-18
Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as they chose.
I was recently experiencing the moral injury of working within systems, trying to create change. I was talking with a friend about the challenge of the constant feeling of complicity, that in order to create relief in some areas (incarcerated youth), sometimes in my work life, I have to be silent about other things (Palestine). I can be logical about how this works in life, but I think it’s hard to prepare myself for the personal impact of not being able to fight for all injustice all the time.
My friend reminded me of how we all have roles in the revolution, that none of us have all the roles and skills that are need. So, how do understand our role?
Their conversation reminded me of this text. We cannot forget that we have one place out of many as a part of The Body. We have both a limited scope and an absolute need for coordination.
How might you better communicate with other parts of The Body, creating community, care, and change in the world around you? How do you know where your role starts and stops? Check in with yourself - what do you bring to the Revolution?
