subverting competition culture
What steps can you take to promote a more inclusive and equitable environment?
Mark 9:34
They were silent. On the road they had argued about who was the greatest.
There is this desire within many humans to compete and show up as the best – from getting high grades to getting into the best schools and even bulldozing others to “win” the next promotion. It’s something deeply ingrained in our American culture, permeating so many aspects of our lives (let’s not get started on how far many will go when it comes to sports).
Even the disciples weren’t immune.
But the way of Jesus was different. He taught us to love God and love people, to wash one another’s feet, to forgive one another, to be generous and to go the extra mile. These teachings were in stark contrast to the idea of being the best and getting ahead by knocking others down.
Think about ways that competition might create hierarchies or divisions within your communities. What steps can you take to promote a more inclusive and equitable environment?
