start and stop with a question
What question have others rushed to answer for you that needs more time in wondering?
John 14:4-5
[Jesus said,] “You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
Before responding, “follow Jesus!” you should know that Thomas is asking ‘why’ here, not ‘how’.
Jesus won’t set a homing beacon at the goal site. He’s frustratingly secretive that way. So for Thomas to “know the way there” … without knowing where ‘there’ even is?? … doesn’t make sense to him.
He wants an explanation, but he isn’t requesting, “Teach me how”, he is wondering, “Why do I already know how?” How can it be that I know the road well without knowing where the road takes me?”
So let’s stay long with Thomas’ question. Wonder to yourself:
I know the way, despite not knowing where the way points to. Why?
What does it tell me about the possible placements of God’s final goal, that it is attainable? Reachable? Accessible? And in a way I am already familiar with?
Why keep the end hidden, but the way there plain?
