sing for joy
Psalm 92:4
At the works of your hands I sing for joy
There are many celebrations observed in June, including Black Music Month which recognizes the profound contributions of Black artists to the American musical landscape across various genres.
This line from the psalm made me think specifically of Gospel music. Gospel emerged from the spirituals sung by enslaved Africans — songs of hope and resistance. To this day the genre continues to serve a dual role as a form of worship and a means of social commentary. Even as Gospel music continues to evolve, traditional elements are blended with contemporary sounds to honor God, uplift listeners, and inspire change.
As we celebrate Black Music Month, may we be anchored by the joy and inspiration found in genres like Gospel music that reflect the magnificent works of God in a multitude of ways.
Reflect on a moment when music brought you a sense of joy, hope, or comfort. What was it about the music that resonated with you? How might you draw inspiration from it in this present moment?
