Power Within
How would you live differently if you could consistently connect with the power of God that is within you?
Acts 8:9-10
Before Philip’s arrival, a certain man named Simon had practiced sorcery in that city and baffled the people of Samaria. He claimed to be a great person. Everyone, from the least to the greatest, gave him their undivided attention and referred to him as “the power of God called Great.”
What is it about humans that we are always looking for power outside of ourselves?
In this passage, we have a sorcerer, being referred to as “The power of God called Great” because he is outwardly displaying some kind of marvel. Perhaps it’s an illusion, a simple magic trick. Whatever it is, people are ascribing to him a power that they know that no mere mortal could possess.
But when Philip arrives, even Simon has to admit that the power he displays is something beyond what humans are capable of on their own. Unlike Simon, Philip does not simply reveal an external power. He reveals to the believer the power of God that is within them. In many ways, Philip and the other apostles are calling the God out of us rather than simply claiming to have that power for themselves.
How often do you look outside of yourself for power? How would you live differently if you could consistently connect with the power of God that is within you?
