Meditation
How can I practice “meditating” on a verse without overanalyzing it?
Psalm 119:97–103
“I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your decrees are my meditation.”
In this passage, the psalmist isn't bragging about their understanding. Rather, they are describing what occurs when you stop solely reading Scripture and start living by it. Saying that they meditate on God’s decrees indicates intentionally holding God’s ways in mind until they become a part of their being. Most of us read Scripture, whether at church or in our own free time. We value what is said and believe in it, but we never truly implement it. Understanding comes not from the study of these texts, but from carrying the teachings into your life, into the important moments and the mundane.
It is important to take the verses you read, even just one, and carry it with you throughout your day. Not to analyze it, but simply to be present with it and to notice when it needs to surface in your life.
What might it look like to move from reading scripture to living it? How can I practice “meditating” on a verse without overanalyzing it?
