let it go
We all have beliefs we cling to, sometimes to our detriment. What do you need to let go of to be free to trust and have faith?
John 14:1
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
If Jesus wanted to say, “y’all should believe in me”, he’d do so just as John wrote here.
To instruct his disciples to accept his status as Son of God, this would probably be how he’d say that.
But what if Jesus simply wanted to tell his disciples to trust him?
Trust that he’s not lying about his impending betrayal and death? Nor saying comforting fictions about what happens after that?
Well, this is how he’d say that too, because these same words are used for the concept of “trust”.
Under this reading, Jesus’ words transform from a commandment to adopt a particular theological creed, to: “Don’t worry. Y’all trust God, trust me too.”
Christ is the center of my faith, not a belief system, not a human institution, but a person. Someone I can trust to lead me beyond checkbox measures of believing the right thing into true discipleship.
What religious tenet(s) might you have to discard in order to trust Christ? What changes when you let go of those dogmas?
