inspired by friendship
How have societal or cultural messages shaped your perceptions of the women you encounter?
Ruth 3:5, 16-18
She said to her, “All that you say I will do.” … She came to her mother-in-law, who said, “How did things go with you,[e] my daughter?” Then she told her all that the man had done for her, saying, “He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said, ‘Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’” She replied, “Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today.”
I grew up hearing other women were enemies I had to keep as far as possible or eliminate like weeds. They were competition. In that worldview, there was no space for sorority or friendship. But as life went on, I learned that friendship with other women is one of the most life-giving parts of my life.
And I read this story and realize that sorority is more ancient than this silly competition that has mostly benefited the patriarchy. Naomi wanted Ruth to do well and be happy well after the death of her son, Ruth’s husband. And she accompanied Ruth every step of the way. And Ruth trusted Naomi’s wisdom and took her advice. So next time I feel the itch to eliminate women as if they were enemies, maybe I can look up to this friendship and be inspired by it.
