Luke 7:13, The Inclusive Bible
Jesus was moved with pity upon seeing her and said, “Don’t cry.”
At any given time on planet earth, every single human alive is experiencing feelings in response to their needs being met or remaining unmet. This is the basic psychology of being human.
Jesus met a woman in a moment of deep grief and deep need. Her only son was dead and she was widowed. It’s unclear if she had daughters as well; but she was grieving her only sons death. A woman left without a husband or a male son in an overwhelmingly patriarchal culture would have been bereft of economic and social support. And Jesus met her precisely there and had great compassion for her: miraculously raising her son from the dead. The contrast must have been stunning - and what was the testimony of the witnesses? God has visited us.
Where could you use the compassionate visitation of God’s love today?
What are your needs today? Which are being met? Which are left unmet? How do you aim to acknowledge these needs and subsequent feelings?
