Challenging Limitations
Where in your life have you pushed back against a limited understanding of who you are?
Acts 18:18
After staying there for a considerable time, Paul said farewell to the believersi and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut, for he was under a vow.
This verse—and any mention of Priscilla (aka Prisca)—has always grabbed my attention, especially how Priscilla’s name came first. And how later she taught Apollos.
Personally, I come from a traditional church where women are not permitted to teach or preach unless it’s to other women and/or children (and in some instances, women are not allowed to speak at church at all). But I was always inclined to internally question things and my curiosity was piqued whenever I read about this individual who broke the norms of the time.
Like Zelophehad's daughters who advocated for their rightful inheritance, Priscilla's story helped me understand that challenging gender-based limitations and rules wasn't new in Jesus's time and it shouldn’t be new in ours.
The very act of writing this today challenges what I spent half my life under.
Where in your life have you pushed back against a limited understanding of who you are? What have you done to break free from those limiting ideals?
