bearing witness through caregiving
How might you listen to the voices of the caregivers around you today to hear the resurrection stories that they’re sharing?
Matthew 28:8
The women hurried away from the tomb with awe and great joy and ran to carry the good news to the disciples."
Much has been said in years past about the fact that women were the first ones to preach the gospel. So I’m not going to talk about that.
Instead, I want to look at why they were able to preach. It’s because they were doing the care work that created the proximity to witness the miracle of resurrection.
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about caregivers - those who are in solidarity with and tend to those on the margins in our society: the kids and elders, poor folks, houseless, the ill and sick, the messy and traumatized. They are familiar with the vulnerability of this human life and as such, they are present for and able to witness new life springing forth.
Caregivers have often lived their own resurrection stories. When we know resurrection, we crave being a part of it in others’ lives. Caregiving creates proximity to witness the good news.
How might you listen to the voices of the caregivers around you today to hear the resurrection stories that they’re sharing? And what caregiving work gives you the ability to bear witness to the everyday miracles in your community?
