Affirm and Amplify
Who in your life has inspired you by simply showing up and claiming their rightful place?
Luke 10:39
Mary, sister of Martha, sat at Jesus' feet and listened to his teaching, while Martha was busy with preparations.
Mary sat at Jesus's feet, in the position of a disciple. She claimed her right to share that sacred space and also believed that she was worthy to be there.
Jesus didn't shoo her away or make her trade places with someone with more societal power. Nor did she have to conform to any standards of that day and time to be there.
She simply claimed her place.
And with that simple action, she challenged the system around her. No wonder Martha questioned her sister's actions. She thought she knew better. After all, that’s what society had taught her.
But Jesus's affirmation of Mary's choice here is powerful – it teaches that God makes room for those society pushes to the margins.
And that God consistently amplifies the voices silenced by unjust systems – from Zelophehad's daughters to the crying psalmist to Priscilla's teaching and finally here with Mary.
Who in your life has inspired you by simply showing up and claiming their rightful place? How have their actions helped you in your life?
