A New Precedent
What gives you the strength to advocate for justice when the outcome feels uncertain?
Numbers 27:5-7
Moses brought the case to YHWH, who said to Moses, “What the daughters of Zelophehad claim is right and just. You must allow them to inherit the share of property allotted to their uncles, and turn Zelophehad’s inheritance over to them.
According to the laws of their day, Zelophehad's daughters were not meant to receive his inheritance. Yet when it was time for their father’s property to be passed down, they spoke up and advocated for themselves and also requested the preservation of their father's name and lineage. This request challenged the structures and laws of their day.
They didn’t hesitate to act on these things, despite the fact that they could have very well been denied their requests. They also mentioned how this change could impact future generations.
God validated them and set a new precedent. And this beautifully demonstrates how the Divine has always committed to uplifting those silenced by unjust systems.
When we advocate for marginalized folks today, the ripple effect it can have will last beyond us at this singular moment in time. Our work for justice will shape what future generations will inherit.
How can we speak up against today's injustices in ways that might change things for everyone? What gives you the strength to advocate for justice when the outcome feels uncertain?
