8.22.23 - Psalm 96: 10-13
If we could be equitable, would judgement be scorned? When the moment comes today, how might your judgement reveal your sense of equity?
Say among the nations, ‘The Lord rules! The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved. They will judge the peoples with equity.’ Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before God; for they are coming, for they are coming to judge the earth. They will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with their truth.
Have you ever felt that you were judged with equity?
While, logically speaking, it would seem that perfect judgment would be something to be valued, it is a rare person who wants to be judged at all.
What seems fair to the average person is inexhaustible pardon (grace) as it pertains to themselves and judgment should be reserved for those who offend us.
However, by all indications, the Psalmist finds joy in the thought that the only One qualified to judge with equity–God–blesses with judgment even when the verdict is that the people must be corrected.
Further, so established is the judgment that even the fields and the sea rejoice in it. When truth is more valued than comfort, there is nothing to lose with equitable judgment and only reality to gain.
How would you experience yourself and others if you had a preference for equitable judgment over words of comfort and validation?
