7.25.23 - 1 Corinthians 3:1
Who or what shapes your understanding of the divine and the world within and around you? How can you be more intentional about what you consume?
1 Corinthians 3:1
Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ.
One of the things that upsets me the most when I go to different churches is when pastors start talking about the spiritual life as if there was a “good“ spiritual self and a “bad” bodily self.
I think this understanding comes, in great measure, from this passage. Paul talks about the fleshly behaviors as immature and childish, ignoring that, in Jewish tradition, before the Influence of Greek philosophy, the self was a whole. I wonder how he chose the Greek approach over the Jewish notion.
Maybe the cultural influence of the Greeks on his theology was bigger than Paul gave him credit for. Maybe culture influences our theology more than we give it credit for.
In a world of selfies, influencers, TikToks, and Prime Day, we should pay attention to how these things are shaping our understanding of God, ourselves, and the world around us.
Who or what shapes your understanding of the divine and the world within and around you? How can you be more intentional about what you consume?
