6.9.23 - Psalm 29: 3-4, 11
Take time today or this weekend to engage water in ritual, and reflect on what you experience. What does the voice of God sound like in a great storm?
The voice of God is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the God, over mighty waters.The voice of God is powerful;
the voice of God is full of majesty.May God give strength to the people!
May God bless the people with peace!
Water is the most spiritual element of nature in my life. Water is where I feel at home in the world—at home with God.
I revel in a good rain storm or ocean wave. I find peace by babbling brooks, spring rain, and the gentle bubbles of low-tide ebb currents. Even a shower or bath is a poor substitute, but gets me by living in a landlocked state in what is usually (but not this spring) a dry climate. Swimming brings my heart into rhythm and makes my body sing.
The encompassing nature of water shows up in deep snow packs, flooding torrents, and tsunami waves that bury us. A form of destruction and striping of layers of life, histories, peoples, wildlife, the geography of the land as we knew it. There is a way in which water is a form of reclamation, as painful as that is to experience.
A spirituality of peace is not antithetical to strength, nor the pain, suffering, and grief of reclamation and new beginnings.
What does water teach you about the nature and relationship of God?
