5.30.23 - Acts 2:17b-18
What's one way you can cultivate love, peace, justice, and liberation in your life and community today? Start simple.
…and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
Peter interprets the Pentecost event as a fulfillment of a prophetic announcement of the prophet of Israel, Joel, which proclaims the day of the Lord as one where all people will be able to prophesy.
There is much confusion about prophesy. Most people assume it to be the action of foretelling future events.
The most core function of a biblical prophet was to be God’s siren to the people of God, especially their leaders, speaking God’s will for their moral and spiritual lives–namely, to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.
The Spirit is upon us that we might prophesy–to know, live, and proclaim the Way of Christ. How can you cultivate love, peace, justice, and liberation in your life and community?
Pick one to cultivate today. It can be something simple, a smile, an acknowledgement, an act of kindness. That's all it takes sometimes to start something new.
