Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.
We used to sing a song in youth group, more mantra than anything else, that used this phrase as its core message. I hadn’t thought about it in over 30 years, until I read this passage. I’m even humming the tune as I write this.
Memory is a funny thing, especially when triggered by random connections. It muddies the waters of the present, making it hard to shift and change. Yet, without it we wouldn’t know change is needed or necessary.
I read this verse in a pleading exhausted voice because the word clean feels so loaded.
Please, just please give me a break. A moment with a quiet heart, a spirit willing to move forward.
We are good at remembering our mistakes and missteps. Less so at giving ourselves that break.
That’s the challenge, the chance, the opportunity. What’s the break you need to give yourself today in order to see clearly what’s right in front of you?
Co-creating a caring world begins when you believe you are capable of changing, and changing the world around you.
