When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.”
Like the experiences of Peter, James, and John, during Jesus' transfiguration, it can be overwhelming to be met with thick, palpable authenticity.
As we grow and live out our tiny slice of the Creator's image, the freedom we grow into can be an invitation. In those times, the response to authenticity may look many different ways: joy, jealousy, anger, celebration, grief, etc.
I think the root to some of the less-fun responses may be fear.
Fear of change, fear of rejection, fear that we aren't worthy of the same freedom.
For some, the invitation may feel more like an attack; it just means they aren't ready to fight for freedom. They have their own traumas to heal.
There is a push-pull relationship when it comes to growth and transformation. The push to be courageous and the pull to be safe.
As you look ahead to today and the weekend, how might you honor both of these tendencies. What risk might you take in becoming who you want to be, and how might you celebrate safely your choice?
