But his servants approached and said to him, “Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, ‘Wash, and be clean’?”
I often take a simple task and make it complex. Doing this repeatedly in my life has often led me to lonely corners.
This mindset was encountered recently for a report I needed to do at work that required adhering to a template. When faced with the structure, my brain couldn’t form a single thought.
Taking a walk and acknowledging this part of me that struggles with the structure of others, I discovered that I am afraid it isn’t trustworthy.
The familiar feelings from my past, the ones that come from events where I learned resistance was the safer path, did not match the situation. And yet, the strength of the feelings were valid.
Asking for God’s presence in the hesitation allows for the task to be one of care and healing. We return to the present moment where we can be met with the simplicity of helpful direction.
Accompanying the confused part of us with compassion can relieve the weight when simple moments seem difficult. How can you bring compassion to moments that feel too difficult today?
