God settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise God.
There are six stories of barren women in the bible: three of them are wives to the “fathers of faith” and the other were mothers of prophets. In their stories we experience a God who disrupts continuity. In the transition from one generation to the next, we are given a reminder of God’s enduring presence.
I identify with the barren women of this Psalm. My first pregnancy ended with a miscarriage. It was devastating. I’m thankful I was able to turn to my church and a group called “Sisters of Hannah.” After a year, we tried again. This time, we gave birth to a son.
Scripture is often a reminder of God’s character and presence. When we become disconnected from friends or family we tend to forget the nuances of who they are. We forget the foods the like, the books they enjoy, or the things that make them happy. It’s the same with God. Without connecting through scripture and sacred texts, we forget.
The day-to-day things overwhelm our memories and we forget the big and small transformations that make God real in our lives.
How might you commit to just experiencing or remembering some of those small or big transformations that make God real for you today?
