Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains; your judgments are like the great deep; you save humans and animals alike, O Lord. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Clouds.
Mountains.
The Deep.
Humankind.
Animalkind.
River.
Fountain.
Light.
Every one of these was made by Creator God.
Everyone one of these can teach us something about the character and nature of our Divine Creator.
Clouds teach of the far-reaching faithfulness of God. Mountains tell of the steady permanence of God’s righteousness. All of these tangible metaphors anchor us to the intangible. When God seems distant or out of reach, creation is right under our feet, inviting us to touch and feel, taste and see, that the Lord is good.
Likewise, when we are tempted to detach ourselves from this world, to put our hope in escaping this world instead of hoping for its redemption, God invites us to return to the place of God’s presence, and light, and faithfulness. To dwell in the first incarnation, God’s gift of creation.
Pay attention to your surroundings today. Observe the nature, people, and animals around you. When did you sense God’s presence as you attended to your surroundings?
