1.1.24 - Matthew 2:14-15
In this new year, when so much can feel the same, how might you fight the currents of apathy and act with compassion today?
Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son.”
I spent the last week of 2023 in a small town in the border of Mexico and the US.
The border is full of parents who took up their children and fled North to save their families from state violence, organized crime violence, or extreme poverty.
And I have seen in the last three years - under the current administration - the famous wall get taller and more cruel.
Now it is tall enough to kill someone immediately upon falling. And just in case, the government added pointy rocks at the bottom so if someone falls, there is imminent death.
So people are fleeing from Herod to Herod, from a certain death to a certain death in search for liberation.
And I can’t help but wonder, who is Egypt? Who is willing to welcome Jose, Maria y el bebe Jesus?
In this new year, when so much can feel the same, how might you fight the currents of apathy and act with compassion today?
