11.22.23 - Matthew 6:19-21
Pause a moment and take inventory. What matters the most to you? What does your calendar, bank account and junk drawer reveal about this truth? Does this inventory reflect what or who you value most?
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
A perfect complement to James’ warning to the rich (5:1-6), the gospel according to Matthew shares a teaching from Jesus’ sermon on the mount to supplement the warning.
Treasures on earth will rot and rust and be eaten by moths. Treasures in heaven will not fade. And more precisely, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Can you reframe the treasures of your heart to be the same territory as heaven?
The gospel writers repeatedly highlight Jesus' teaching that the kingdom of heaven has come near.
If this is true, then treasures in heaven are the treasures in our hearts…
Take a moment to take inventory. What matters the most to you? What does your calendar, bank account and junk drawer reveal about this truth?
How do you want to continue to store up treasures “in heaven” (in your heart) that do not rot/rust/get eaten by moths?
What or who are your treasures and how does their significance impact your heart?
