Cynicism comes natural to me. Partly because of genetics, partly because of my training in the humanities.
Most days, I dwell in this space of believing we are in a downward spiral, always expecting the worst.
The author of this portion of Isaiah has been to hell and back. They had been in exile and had returned to their land, finding it devastated.
And yet, they live into hope.
Maybe, they saw a flower growing in the middle of ruins; maybe, it's a family moving bricks.
Hope comes in the small details. If a flower can grow in the most inhospitable of environments, so can we. A new heaven and a new earth are coming. It gives me permission to have some hope.

I've been trying to turn my cynicism into curiosity and have found that I've been more hopeful as a result.
I'm committed to seeing a little hope in the people I meet with today. I want to find that moment and shred of hope and just acknowledge it.
