“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.” - Luke 18:14
This passage may be familiar to you; Jesus compares the prayers of a self-righteous Pharisee to that of a distraught tax-collector. For myself, I relate strongly to both of these prayers. I can play my own version of each of these characters at times, but they feel like the too hot/too cold Goldilocks prayers, cycling around something more truthful. What if humbling wasn’t about debasing oneself or beating oneself up but was more about honestly facing who you are and what you have done? It can be easier to proclaim that I am all horrible than to allow the complexity of continuing growth and revelation. What keeps you from being able to see yourself under the bright light of humility and honesty?
Where do you find yourself inclined to collapse instead of facing the complexity of the reality of who you are?
What do you imagine God sees you when you are humbled and honest? What do you imagine God’s response to you would be?
