For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths.
We’re just racking up the “unsound teaching” verses this week. First, the Psalms and now this word from Second Timothy.
Looking at how there seems to be more wandering away from the gospel within some churches seems to be the low hanging fruit here.
The more complex response is one of gratitude, of taking a posture of thanks to the people and communities who travel with us faithfully through life. These are the people who, with compassion, kindness, and clarity point us in directions of growth and formation.
They’re the ones who challenge us with their own lives and words into becoming more.
Who are these people in your life? How might you make them aware of your gratitude today?
I won’t ask you to name names, but in the comments, describe a person or two who you’re willing to reach out and thank for their teaching presence.
I can think of two at this moment. One died a few years back, but he was a catalyst for creative and constructive theological thinking in my life. The other constantly challenges and supports me to imagine and follow through. She'll get a thank you a little later today.
